Colour Management - Capture to Print

Learn to make your camera do what you want - or at least start to understand why it doesn't.

Colour management is one of those subjects that photographers either take for granted or find baffling. If your prints don't match your screen, your images look different across applications, or you're not sure whether to work in sRGB, Adobe RGB, or ProPhoto - this session covers all of it, clearly and practically.

The session is taught one-to-one, which means it adapts to wherever you are in your workflow and whatever problems you're trying to solve. Whether you're starting from scratch or unpicking a system that has never quite worked, we'll work through it together. It can be taught in person at the studio or via Zoom.

How colour is managed through a workflow

Monitor and capture:

Monitor calibration — hardware and software options
Building and maintaining a calibrated profile

Managing colour in Lightroom and Photoshop

Output and printing:

CC paper profiles — what they are and how to use them
Soft proofing in Lightroom and Photoshop
Print settings and the print dialogue
Rendering intents: perceptual vs relative colorimetric
Evaluating and comparing prints

In-person consultancy

Separately, Barrie is available for in-person consultancy visits to help troubleshoot specific colour management or printing problems at your location - working directly with your monitor, printer, and software in your own space. This is a different service from the class, suited to photographers who already have a workflow they cannot get to behave. An initial Zoom consultation is recommended first to establish what is needed and whether a visit is the right approach. Currently available to clients in West Lothian and the surrounding area.

Requirements

Experience Some Photoshop or Lightroom experience is assumed. You should have a working post-processing workflow — this session is about bringing colour management into it, not building the workflow from scratch.

Equipment Your own computer with Lightroom and/or Photoshop installed. If you have a hardware calibrator, have it ready. A printer is not required for the class itself.
