Studio Lighting Fundamentals
The technical foundations you need before shooting with a model — metering, modifiers, and light placement explained properly in a professional studio.
This is the theory and technical session that underpins everything else we teach. We cover all the core principles of studio lighting before a model is ever in the room — which is exactly where they should be covered. Most lighting problems come from not understanding the fundamentals, and this session fixes that.
The tutorial generally doesn't involve a model. The material we want to cover is best absorbed without the distraction of shooting, and you'll get far more from any subsequent model session having done this first.
We'll Cover All the Core Principles:
- Exposure and metering in the studio.
- What settings we use and why.
- The inverse square law.
- White balance.
- Lens choices.
- The different lighting modifiers.
- Where to place lights and how to feather them.

Requirements:
Experience
This is not an introductory photography class - you should be comfortable operating your camera. If you're not there yet, our Digital Photography Intro class is the right starting point.
Gear
Your camera must be capable of operating studio flash via a hotshoe trigger or PC sync socket. A lens equivalent to 24–70mm on full frame (or 18–55mm on crop) is the minimum.
